Accessibility
The grounds are largely unpaved and include uneven terrain, steep staircases, and narrow passages through historic masonry walls, which can be challenging for visitors with mobility limitations. A paved parking area and some flat exterior pathways are available, but full access to the fort's interior levels and bastions requires navigating stairs and rough surfaces. No elevators are present. Visitors using wheelchairs or who have difficulty with stairs should plan for limited access to upper areas.
Why It's Worth the Stop
Fort Morgan sits at the very tip of a narrow peninsula where Mobile Bay meets the Gulf of Mexico, and its well-preserved brick walls and earthworks tell the story of more than 150 years of American coastal defense, from the War of 1812 through World War II. Walking the star-shaped bastions and peering through cannon embrasures with sweeping water views on both sides makes for a genuinely immersive history experience.
The fort is most famous as the site of the August 1864 Battle of Mobile Bay, where Admiral David Farragut reportedly shouted “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!” as his Union fleet ran past the Confederate guns here. That single engagement effectively closed the last major Confederate Gulf port and helped seal the outcome of the Civil War.
